Flowers come from all over the world and, because of this, some of them are more exotic (rare) than others, especially when they have very short growth seasons are very specific growth requirements. These flowers can be beautiful but quite delicate and may not fare well in all climates or be good for all occasions. Before deciding on whether to go for a more exotic flower arrangement or one that is more traditional and seasonal, you will want to investigate a bit and talk to you florist to find out what flowers you should choose that will fit your style and budget and will withstand conditions that may not be optimal. If you decide to make the splurge and cost is not an issue, there are several flowers that can give you serious bang for your buck.

There are some flowers that are known to be expensive in Canada that may be more cost effective somewhere else. For instance, if you lived in Thailand, you would be able to find almost any flower you wanted, no matter how exotic, for a very reasonable price. If you really want to wow the recipient, there are several flowers that are beautiful and make a strong statement, if a bit pricey.

These include:

Orchids. These lovely flowers are both stunning and understated. They come in a variety of colors but, you may have to forgo the very rare black orchid as it only grows in the forests of South America.

Calla lilies. Elegant and sleek, calla lilies make a statement unlike any other flower. The flower’s clean lines and chic looks make it very popular for weddings and added to arrangements. White ones are more common than red and purple and will be priced accordingly.

Lilly of the Valley. This fragrant beauty is one of the most expensive flowers in the floral industry.

Peonies. Softer than roses but similar in appearance, peonies can be difficult to find and are generally not very hearty.

Magnolias. These flowers are not commonly used and cost is proportional to availability.

Hydrangeas. These delightfully feminine flowers are expensive but their large, tightly-packed blooms require fewer to get the desired affect.

If the old standbys of roses and carnations are just not your cup of tea, choose flowers that cost a bit more but are more unique and surprising to the recipient. You will also want to keep in mind that these flowers will be even more expensive if you are looking for them when they are not in season.
