Those who were surveyed said flowers and plants were a critical and necessary component of memorial and funeral services, providing a necessary diversion, something to talk about, and to brighten up the somber occasion, somewhat.

The respondents were also asked to name the gifts that brought them the most comfort and again flowers and plants ranked at the top of the list. Reading the sympathy cards and memorial telegrams came in a close second.
